Building and Assigning Learning Paths – Curriculum Guide

A learning path lines up courses into a learning route for a particular role or level. If a course is a single piece of material, a path is the route itself: "this is what we want this person to learn, in this order." This guide walks you through the screens for creating and editing paths, adding courses to them, and assigning them to departments and members.

Opening Learning Path Management

Click Learning Path Management (学習パス管理) in the left sidebar. The URL is /en-US/{organization ID}/curriculum/paths.

How the screens are laid out

Path list
  • Above the list: the Add a new learning path (新しい学習パスを追加), Bulk register / update (一括登録・更新) and Bulk-link courses (コース紐付け一括設定) buttons, plus a search box for path names and labels
  • Each path card shows its name, labels, number of courses and number of assigned members
  • View details (詳細を見る) on a card opens that path's details page
Path details and editing
  • Basic info (the Edit (編集) button): path name, description, content language, default due date (days), default retake cycle (months) and labels. Public/private is switched separately, on the Public path (公開パス) card of the details page
  • Courses (Manage courses (コースを管理)): add courses to the path or remove them (the order you add them in is the order learners take them)
  • Departments (Manage departments (部署を管理)): assign the path automatically to every member of a department
  • Members (Manage members (メンバーを管理)): add or remove individual users

Common tasks

  1. On the path list, click Add a new learning path (新しい学習パスを追加).
  2. Enter a path name, a description and labels (for example "Sales", "Engineers" or "New hires"). If you need them, also set a default due date (how many days after assignment it falls due) and a default retake cycle (in months).
  3. To list the path in a catalog that everyone in your organization can see, open its details page after creating it and click Make public (公開する) on the Public path (公開パス) card. It will then appear on the learners' Public Paths page.
  4. Click Create (作成する) and you're taken back to the path list.
Labels help you remember later who a path was meant for. They pay off more and more as you run more paths, so it's easiest to add them from the start.

  1. On the path details page, click Manage courses (コースを管理) in the Course structure (コース構成) section.
  2. In the Add courses (コースを追加) list, click Add (追加) next to each course you want in this path. Each course is added at the end.
  3. The order you add courses in becomes their order, and learners work through them in that order. You can't reorder courses on this screen, so to change the order, remove a course and add it again, or set the whole order at once with Bulk-link courses (コース紐付け一括設定).
  4. Each add or remove is saved immediately.
The order is exactly the route learners follow. Put courses that teach prerequisite knowledge first, and learners are less likely to get stuck partway through.

  1. On the path details page, click Manage departments (部署を管理) in the Assigned departments (割り当てられた部署) section.
  2. Open Add department (部署を追加). If you need them, set a due date (one calendar date for everyone in the department), whether it's required training and a retake cycle, then click Add (追加) next to the department.
  3. Every member of that department is automatically assigned this path (assignment via department).
  4. When someone new joins the department, they pick up the assignment automatically.
Assigning through departments means you don't have to reassign anything every time someone joins or changes teams. When you expect people to come and go, this is the way to go.

  1. On the path details page, click Manage members (メンバーを管理) in the Enrolled members (受講メンバー) section, open Add member (メンバーを追加), search for the user and click Add (追加). If you leave the due date blank, the path's default due date applies (if it has one).
  2. These are tracked as "direct assignments", separately from department assignments.

  1. Click Paths by Department (部署別パス管理) in the left sidebar to see the paths for each department.
  2. On a department's card, click Manage → (管理する →), then click Assign (割り当て) next to a path under Paths you can add (追加できるパス). You can't set a due date or mark it required on this screen; if you need to, assign it from Manage departments in Learning Path Management instead.
  3. This is handy when you want to design paths starting from your organization structure.

  1. Use Bulk register / update (一括登録・更新) on the path list to create or update many paths at once (columns: Name, Description, Labels, IsPublic; a path with the same name is updated).
  2. Use Bulk-link courses (コース紐付け一括設定) on the path list to set the courses in each path in one go (one row per path; existing links are replaced).
  3. This saves a lot of time when you're setting up many learning routes for the first time.

  1. On the path details page, click Make public (公開する) or Unpublish (公開解除) on the Public path (公開パス) card.
  2. A public path is listed in the catalog on the learners' Public Paths page.
  3. A private path is visible only to people it's assigned to, directly or through a department.

The three ways a path reaches learners

The same path can reach a learner in three ways. Which one you use affects how much upkeep it needs later.

Individual
Direct assignment

You add specific users explicitly. Use this when you want to reach particular people.

Follows changes
Via department

Assigned automatically based on department membership, and it keeps up automatically when the members change.

Self-enroll
Public path

Learners join it themselves from the catalog. Use this when you want to leave it to people who are keen to learn.

On the learner side, all of these come together in My Learning Path. Only administrators need to think about how a path was assigned; learners just look at one list. HR can see how each path was assigned (direct or via department) on the employee details page. If a path is assigned both directly and through a department, the earlier due date applies, and it counts as required if either assignment is required.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause and fix
I saved the path but employees can't see it Making a path public and assigning it are separate settings. Making it public only lists it on Public Paths; it doesn't reach any individual user. Assign it through Manage departments or Manage members.
I assigned it to a department but members aren't getting it The department may have no members. Check its members in HR → Departments → the department's details.
I want to change the course order The Manage courses screen has no reordering; courses stay in the order you added them. To change the order, remove the courses and add them again, or list them in the order you want with Bulk-link courses.
I want to get rid of a path I no longer need Learning Path Management has no way to delete a path. Make it private and remove its department and member assignments instead; that stops it while keeping learners' history.
Errors when bulk-linking courses with CSV Rows are matched by name, not ID. Check that the path name matches an existing path (create the path first if it doesn't exist) and that each course name matches a course title exactly. Courses that don't match are reported as Partial (部分的) in the results. Also keep the column order (path name, number of courses, then course names).
